How To Format/ Erase Information on a USB Drive on Windows 10 / Windows 11

Make sure you save any work that you need from the USB drive since you will be erasing everything

Step 1

Click on “Type here to search” and type in This PC.

Step 2

Click on the Blue highlighted one at the top of the screen as shown below.

Step 3

Screen will come up that looks like the picture below.

Right click on the USB drive that you want to erase all content from and find “format” 

Picture below shows what to look for.

Step 4

Another window will open.

Quick formatting with be checked off by default (automatically)

Where it says “volume label” this is what the USB will be named, you can leave it blank or something custom to help you remember what’s on the USB (ex. Family Picture)

Click on Start.

Step 5

A warning window will come up saying “ WARNING: Formatting will erase ALL data on this disk. To format the disk , click OK. To quit, click CANCEL.”

Click on OK

Step 6

When finished. Window will come up saying “Format Complete” Click on OK

Close all windows.
